Homemade Biscuits ~ Biscuits Supreme

Pin It Now!

I love my old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook, copyright 1996. I have a few go-to, tried-and-true recipes from there, and you can tell by their frayed, stained pages. One of the yummy recipes I make over and over again is Biscuits Supreme.

Original Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 TBSP baking powder
  • 2 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) of real butter cut into small pieces
  • 2/3 cup milk
Directions:

Stir together first 5 ingredients. Cut in 1/2 cup butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center, and add 2/3 cup milk all at once. Stir until moistened.

Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Quickly knead dough by gently folding and pressing dough 10-12 strokes or until nearly smooth. Pat or lightly roll dough to 1/2" thickness. Cut dough with a floured 2 1/2" biscuit cutter.

Place biscuits 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in 450° oven for 10 -12 minutes or until golden. Remove biscuits from baking sheet and serve hot. Makes about 10 biscuits.

Over the years, I have tried different things in order to perfect them to my liking and to make them more healthy. So, following are some tips to try that have worked for me.

Brandi Raae's Biscuit Tips
  • Flour - I like to mix different flours. For example, I might use 1 cup King Arthur's All-Purpose Flour and 1 cup King Arthur's Whole Wheat Flour. Sometimes, if I have any on hand, I might use coconut flour, rice flour, almond flour, buckwheat, or whatever. I've used lots of different combinations, however, using at least one cup all-purpose flour helps biscuits with lightness and fluffiness. :)
  • Sweetness - I often substitute white sugar with raw honey. I use 2 tsp. honey and add it to the milk instead of stirring it into the dry ingredients.
  • Butter - I always use real butter, but the recipe says you can use shortening if you want.
  • Flaxseed - I like to add ground flaxseed or ground wheat germ when I have it on hand. I probably add about 2 TBSP to the dry ingredients.
  • Cutting in butter - You know what, I usually use my hands for this stage. ;)
  • Kneading dough - I knead dough a few times before taking it out of the bowl or it's too messy. I make sure it is one solid chunk before setting it on the counter.
  • Cutting out biscuits - After I pat and roll out dough, I just use a small Tupperware cup to cut them out, and I don't flour it first.
  • Baking - I set my oven to 425° and bake for about 10 minutes. I don't like the outside to be too crusty.
  • Serving - We love ours with butter and jam or honey. :)
If the biscuits don't turn out the first time, try again! I've been making them for a LONG time, and truly, once you learn you'll be able to whip them up in no time flat.

Photo Booth Props ~ Thanksgiving 2013

Pin It Now!

Spice up any family get-together or party with Photo Booth Props!

I had no idea these were all the rage until I began searching for photo props for a girls' tea party. When I saw these Thanksgiving photo booth props, I knew they'd be perfect for having some fun with all the cousins. I also found mustaches, lips, crowns, hats, beards, and more while scouring the internet. I even made a couple of my own on Pic Monkey. :) I can't wait to do this again for Christmas!!

Pre Photo Booth Prop Fun

Thanksgiving at Dad's this year. Desert weather permits all the high-energy children to eat and play outside. I guess that's one plus. :)

Here begins the photo booth prop fun . . .

Even the adults got in on the fun!

Everyone really seemed to enjoy posing with the photo booth props. Try some at your next get-together - they worked for us!

*Bonus*
What's really fun is to animate your photo booth prop photos! My hubby has an app for that. :)

Fall Loveliness

Pin It Now!

No tips to share or images to pin - just the reality of our life and some things I love about fall. Even in the desert, there's loveliness in the fall. It's not about the weather or the leaves showing their true colors; it's about family, faith, friends, and the fullness of life.

We're blessed.

Fall loveliness is . . .

our family's special pre-thanksgiving meal, my grandma's dishes, my mom's old plates mixed with my not-so-old plates, Mark's first smoked turkey that turned out divine, and apothecary jars from my hubby filled with fall-ish things as our autumn centerpiece. Even with a broken oven, our feast was wonderful, although we didn't get to eat that perfect-looking pumpkin pie. My oven broke right in the middle of baking it. :(

Fall loveliness is . . .

favorite fall food and drinks: hot corn and harvest apple cider!

Fall loveliness is . . .

is gathering with friends for crafting and chatting.

Fall loveliness is . . .

bright, beautiful pansies, soccer, and tree trimming.

Fall loveliness is . . .

a homeschool harvest party with festive food, fun crafts, and good friends.

What is fall loveliness for you?

Ornament Reveal

Pin It Now!

Receiving new ornaments on Memory Tree decorating day is one of our family's FAVORITE Christmas traditions! Each year we give our kids a new ornament, and I absolutely love trying to find ones that are going to be special for each child.

This year, we gave Mullin Gandalf the Grey since he, and really all of us, are such HUGE Lord of the Rings fans. We gave Lincoln, our Rootbeer Fanatic, a root beer ornament, and we gave Shiloh a cute, little polar bear with a penguin because she adores animals with all of her heart.

It is my hope that when my kids are grown and gone and decorating their own trees with their families that all of the ornaments they've received over the years will bring back sweet memories of their childhood.

In the quiet and comfort of my own bedroom, I prepare for the special night of trimming our Memory Tree. I enjoy getting all of their ornaments out each November, carefully unwrapping each one, and lingering over the memories that each ornament brings to mind. Our kids have lots of ornaments, too, because grandparents have also been generous in the ornament-giving department. It's wonderful reliving so many memories of our kids' childhoods!

Our Memory Tree houses all of our family's ornaments that have been given to us over the years by family and friends. Our kids have so many ornaments now that all of my hubby's and my ornaments don't even fit anymore. That's okay because one day it'll just be our ornaments on the Memory Tree again. And that will actually be kind of sad.

Hubby got me a heart ornament from World Market for our turquoise tree. He gave me a heart ornament last year, too. He has great taste and knows me well. Love having a husband that knows how to shop for his girl!!

This is also the night we all drink our first cup of Christmas Hot Cocoa. We used to save this drink for December 1st, but we sort of changed that tradition. :)

So blessed to be able to make such great memories with my family. What are your favorite family Christmas traditions?

Our Top Ten Schoolhouse Review Crew Products for 2013

Pin It Now!

blueribbonaward2013smThe TOS 2013 Crew Year has come to a close. At the end of the year, Crew Members can vote for their favorite products. This year there were 38 categories, and 28 of the 86 companies received blue ribbon awards. If you'd like to see which products the Crew loved the most, visit The Schoolhouse Review Crew!

Well, I decided to write my own top 10 list to share with you all. As a Schoolhouse Review Crew Member, my family and I had the privilege of using and reviewing over 30 products this past year. Let me tell you, with all the reviewing, the year seems to FLY by!

I think I have been a part of The Old School House for about 4 years now, and it really has been such a blessing for our family. Here are our 2013 favorites . . .

In no particular order:

1. Apologia: Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics

2. Starter Chess Learning Kit

3. Homeschool Mom's Bible

4. Institute for Excellence in Writing: Teaching the Classics

5. See It And Say Flip Flop Spanish

6. The Art of Poetry

7. Time4Learning

8. Song School Spanish

9. Seed Sowers: Gospel Planting Adventures

10. News Flash: God's World News Magazine

It was definitely challenging choosing only ten products. I chose these products for lots of different reasons. I tried to think about the enthusiasm my children showed about each product and how it helped them with learning. I also tried to think about how convenient and easy-to-use the products were (and still are) for me as a homeschool parent.

And that's a wrap! I am enjoying the review break but am looking forward to next year. :)
