How Should Christian Moms Approach Halloween?
So, today is Halloween. Christians are certainly divided on the subject of should we celebrate it or not, aren't we?Well, I'm not going to tell you exactly how you should approach Halloween. Because I really don't know. I'm pretty confident, however, that we shouldn't celebrate evil or make light of it either. I think the question with which we wrestle is this: Is participating in anything "Halloween related" wrong? In my opinion, it's just not as black and white as we'd all like for it to be. Halloween, and really any holiday, can get kind of complicated. Am I right?
What we as Christian moms can do about Halloween is seek the Lord (and our husbands) and find out what's appropriate for our own families.
How I've Approached Halloween as a Christian Mom
And that's exactly what I did back in 2007, when my children were much younger. I decided to do some research on the origins and what not of Halloween for myself. I actually enjoyed the research and found out a bunch of interesting facts. Final Thoughts
Personally, I don't want to celebrate or glorify evil. And that's what I hear a lot of Christians saying when it comes to having any association with Halloween. I get it. And I agree with it. While I'm not advocating indulging in all things horror and scary, I do think it's wise to stop and think about evil and that it encompasses far more than witches, ghosts, and scary Halloween decor.Before we get all high and mighty about what we do or don't do for Halloween, let's take note that Paul included in his first letter to the Corinthians the sin of grumbling right alongside idolatry and sexual immorality as examples of "setting our hearts on evil things." Okay, so I don't celebrate grumbling, but I sure do indulge in it every once in awhile. According to God's Word, this is pure evil. I hate to admit it, but sometimes I don't seem to take this sin as seriously as I should.
Also, In 1 Timothy chapter 4, Paul mentions the "doctrines of demons." Do you know what he includes as examples of demonic doctrines/teachings? Forbidding people to marry and ordering people to abstain from certain foods. Interesting, huh?
My point is that evil is SO MUCH more than the goings-on of Halloween. Christians should avoid all evil. But be a light in the midst of evil if you can. In light of today and every other day, let us keep 1 Corinthians 10:31 in mind - "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." If you can bring glory to God by participating in some aspects of Halloween, do so. If you can't, don't.
I may not do anything at all this Halloween. My kids are too old to trick-or-treat, and I can't decide if I want to spend the outrageous amount of money on candy! I could be missing out on meeting all of our new neighbors, though. What to do? ;)
