Latin Break

Pin It Now! Salvete!

Summer for me is not a break from home schooling. It just means I have to plan for the upcoming year. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. So far, I have a list of most of the supplies I will need, but Latin, oh what to do about Latin??

My soon-to-be sixth grader has completed 3 years of Latin (I use Latina Christiana), and there isn't a fourth book for the curriculum I use. We could move on to another curriculum, but I can tell my son needs a break from it. I admit Latin isn't that easy, but it is something I want all of my kids to learn.

With the fact that my son needs a break decided, I had no idea with what to replace that subject?? I have been pondering this for weeks!

The longed-for light bulb finally went off the other day. . . NUTRITION!! (And not a government funded nutrition curriculum, either!) Yes, I have a huge passion for this already, and I want my kids to understand why. My son's already watched the Food Inc. documentary--completely of his own accord--and I think he was actually slightly interested. (Sometimes he just gives me that look, though, whenever I go off on a health tangent. Hmm, it's the same look my husband gives me.)

Ya know what? There isn't a whole lot to choose from when it comes to sound nutritional curriculum. Maybe there is and I just don't know where to look? Since I will be teaching a 3rd grader and a kindergartner, I do not have the time to find ALL of the info on my own.

I happened upon this book yesterday. I am hoping it will be just the thing I have been looking for!! Anyone heard of it or know anything about it?

Well today over lunch, I voiced my concerns about Latin and how I could tell my son was losing interest, and I gave him a choice--Latin next year or Nutrition? He didn't even have to think about it. Nutrition (my style) it is!!!! (Staci, I may need your advice on this!!)

Sorry Lincoln, you still have to start Latin in a couple of months!

I am excited about nutrition and welcome any advice on great books or sites or curriculum!!

Valete!

We must talk. Lots of thoughts on this. Did Mark pass along my email to you? :)

Great information here on the nutrition book. I have thought about doing this too. How did you find this book? I looked some at the library but didn't find anything except what our wonderful government teaches. I realized that I don't like it or even agree with their "pyramid". So frustrating. It is amazing the things you realize and learn when you open your brain and think on your own instead of having someone else "fill" your brain for you. ha!

I have thought about getting the Latin book too. If nothing else, I want to at least look over it myself and maybe introduce a little of it this next year to my kids. I plan on trying to find the Latin book(s) at the Homeschool Convention in July. We do need to plan a time to exchange the science books, too.
