Cami Secret: A Little Modesty Goes A Long Way

Pin It Now!

While this isn't going to be a post about what modesty is or isn't, it is my personal opinion that letting one's cleavage hang out all over the place isn't modest at all. (And by the way, I think modesty is SO much more than the clothes we wear.) Anyway, for those who may be interested, I'm just sharing how I found a cleavage-covering alternative to tank tops. :)

My budget typically doesn't allow for spontaneous purchases, but when I saw these, I KNEW I had to have them! It just gets too hot in the part of Arizona that I live in to always have to wear tank tops underneath shirts. Plus, it seems that most tank tops these days are cut too low anyway and don't quite do the job I want them to do.

Cami Secret has been a life saver for those shirts and dresses that are just a tad too low cut.

What exactly is Cami Secret then? Basically, like it says on the cover of the package, Cami Secret contains clip-on mock camisoles. They clip on to your bra straps, and the height of the cami can even be adjusted a little bit.

I found 2 photos of myself wearing the black and white mock camisoles. Hopefully this gives you a better idea of how they look while being worn.

Now, just so you know, Cami Secret doesn't work with every shirt. If the top you're wearing is made of thin or partially see-through fabric, the mock camisoles will show through. I still sometimes have to go with a tank top, but that's okay. Sometimes the layers look nice.

I really think these little pieces of fabric go a long way in the modesty department! They've worked for me quite well. I've included links below to the exact ones that I have which came in a package of 3 in black, white, and beige. I've also included a link to some that don't have lace, and I even think I'd like those better.

Cami Secret works for me!

Should You Buy Jewelry from Amazon?

Pin It Now!

In light of Valentine's Day, I thought I'd share my unfortunate wedding ring story that ended happily ever after due to Amazon! (If you're not into stories, feel free to scroll down to the end of this post and find out my answer to the title's question. Also be sure to click on the links and buy jewelry!)

A few years ago I began experiencing some swelling in my fingers during the night while I slept. I'd never had to take off my rings before going to bed, but a couple of desperate middle-of-the-night attempts to "unstuck" my wedding ring served as a compelling reminder to take my rings off as part of my bedtime routine.

However, one night I forgot.

To make matters worse, my husband happened to be out of town the night I had to choose between keeping my ring or my finger. I awoke in the middle of the night that night with the realization that not only were my fingers super swollen but that my wedding ring was still on one of them.

Pulling with all my might didn't work one bit, so I got up, and through much prayer and tears tried everything I knew to do. Butter. Oil. Lotion. Cold water. Sticking my hand in the freezer. You name it.

After some time had gone by and my finger started turning purple, I became a bit frantic. I debated whether or not I should call 911. I know. Before I completely humiliated myself by dialing for emergency help, I decided to try and cut my ring off. I felt horrible, but I figured it was better than losing my finger.

I found a wire cutter in the garage, and with racing heart and trembling hands, I pressed on those wire cutter handles with all the strength I could muster. It took several agonizing tries, but finally the blades broke through the gold. Pure relief! I praised the Lord that I'd chosen a dainty, thin band all those years ago and that I was only wearing the engagement ring that night.

I felt awful about destroying my husband's symbol of undying love and devotion that he gave to me in the parking lot of Howard's Donuts on a chilly November night in 1996, but it had to be done to save my finger.

Well, we didn't have extra money at the time to just go out and buy a brand new diamond ring, so I went without. I tried to wear a cheap, fake wedding-looking ring from Charming Charlie, but as expected, my acidic skin turned the band a funky color within a week. So that didn't work.

In late 2013, my hubby started looking into ordering quality yet inexpensive rings off of Amazon. He sent me several designs from which to choose, and my favorite was the Zoe R 925 Sterling Silver Cubic Zirconia pictured on my finger below. I've worn this ring everyday since January 2014.

First picture: my real gold and diamond engagement ring that I had to cut off of my finger.
Second picture: my new, beautiful sterling silver cubic zirconia ring from Amazon.

It's funny because even though my current ring is considered "fake," I get so many compliments on it. When I tell people what it is, they sometimes don't believe me at first. I love it and couldn't be happier with it. I really don't care that it isn't "real." I love that I don't have to worry about losing or cutting off a super expensive ring. Plus, maybe in the future, I'll even get to order more rings so I can change them out according to my mood or outfit.

(images from Amazon)

Answer: So, my answer to the question, "Should you buy jewelry from Amazon?" is YES! I am a 100% happy and satisfied customer. (The affiliate link to my ring is for a size 8.5, but I ordered my normal size of 4.5, and it fits perfectly. Pay attention to the size you need.)

If you'd rather go all out and get the real thing, by all means do so! I won't complain one bit. ;)

Here are some other sterling silver rings that I think are pretty. And they're inexpensive. :)

Okay, I think I could look at rings all day long, but those above are just a few that I saw that I liked.

While I can't specifically vouch for other jewelry on Amazon, here are some categories you may wish to peruse. Right now, Amazon has a Valentine special going on: take 30% off of eligible jewelry from now until February 7.

Women's rings

Bracelets

Earrings

Happy shopping! I'd love to know what your favorite rings are, and have you ever bought jewelry from Amazon?

Guest Post: Changing Skin, Changing Lives

Pin It Now!

Today I am excited to introduce you to Mimi who is guest posting about a product that I've heard people raving about. I've never used these particular Rodan + Fields skin products, but I have used Rodan + Fields Proactiv for about 8 years now. It's the ONLY thing that I've found that helps me have clear skin!

If you've been looking for a skin care regimen that can help your skin look and feel its best, check out what Mimi has to say. Be sure to check out her website and a deal going on right now listed below. :)

Changing Skin, Changing Lives
Do you ever look in the mirror and wonder who is looking back at you?   Me too!   My skin used to be riddled with sun damage and melasma (pregnancy mask).  My cute freckles had turned into ugly splotches and they were everywhere – on my face, neck, chest and arms.  I tried several products to fade the spots with no success.  Instead, I covered my uneven skin tone and spots with lots of foundation and never left the house without make-up.
Earlier this year, one of my girlfriends introduced me to Rodan + Fields skincare products.  The same doctors who created Proactiv formulated products to deal with a multitude of skin concerns…and one of them was sun-damage.  I’ve been using the REVERSE Regimen and Skin Lightening Accelerator Pack since September and I feel like a new person!   My skin glows again and I am comfortable leaving the house without gobs of make-up!
  • If you have sensitive skin, Rodan + Fields can help you.
  • If you have adult acne, Rodan +Fields can help you.
  • If you have sun damage, dark spots or melasma, Rodan + Fields can help you.
  • If you have enlarged pores, wrinkles and loss of firmness, Rodan + Fields can help you.

THAT Family Carnival: Large ???? Cottage Cheese and Something from the Heart

Pin It Now!

Picture 034b

I have never thought of my family as “That Family” in the funny, crazy sense. ( Although, we just might be the only family that has Large Curd Cottage Cheese in the fridge in which the “C” in Curd is crossed out with a black sharpie and replaced by a “T”.) Um yes, we never lack for bathroom humor around here.

While I personally may not have a laundry list of THAT family mishaps, I do very much like hearing other moms’ hilarious, “This must only happen to me” stories! I think that’s why I miss being a part of MOMS so much. Jean Stockdale, was a pro at telling the BEST mom stories. She’d have me practically rolling in the isle on a weekly basis. I would always leave MOMS thinking, “How in the world can so much happen to just one person?!” ;) (If anyone lives near Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, TN, you really must become a part of the MOMS Ministry there!!)

Anyway, just like any mom, I have found myself in embarrassing, “just get me outta here situations”, but for the most part I have found myself thinking we are THAT family because I’m THAT slightly crunchy parent. (I’d include the hubster here, but he’s only crunchy because I’m crunchy.)

You know the ones----

The home schooled, couscous and quinoa-eating ones.

The anti hydrogenated, raw milk drinkin’, minute rice-hating ones

The green cleaning, essential oil and herb-using ones

Just to name a few. ;)

I am sure I got some weird looks when I would bring my toddlers their own, all natural snacks to Sunday School because I just couldn’t bear for them to eat Saltines or Goldfish. (Give me some slack—I have eased up on that after being a parent for 10 years—I know they won’t die from eating them, at least not immediately.)

People look at me funny, like I must not even be an earthling, when it comes up that my kids have never had antibiotics. (My second born did have an ear drop antibiotic once after an accidental rupturing of the eardrum with a Q-tip. That story deserves its very own post for sure!)

And I know I’ve received some blank stares when it happens to come up that my kids have never had formula or white sandwich bread.

I don’t usually broadcast these types of things, but sometimes they just come up. And that’s when I feel like crawling under a rock and holding up a sign that says, “Yep, we are THAT family!”

So, that’s how I considered myself to be a part of THAT family until last year, the day before Halloween.

On that particular Thursday morning, we REALLY became THAT FAMILY. I even entitled a post, “We Are That Family” shortly thereafter. And that post was written before I ever became part of Kristen’s virtual, We are THAT Family.

Why did we all of the sudden become THAT family more than ever?

Well, the unthinkable happened.

My husband came home unexpectedly early. Jobless. Just like that. No signs, no warnings. Our family became just like so many other families we kept hearing about on the news or through the grapevine. The “economic crisis” hit home and the nightmare began. It has been almost one year since that dreadful day, and I have posted about our journey from time to time on my blog if you’d like to read more.

“We are that family”

“In Which the Ragamuffin Family Returns to Normal, Sort of”

“Guess It’s Time for an Update”

“Sacrifice”

“Comfort Zone Issues”

BUT…

As of right now, we are THAT family

who is persevering through trial.

who is becoming stronger despite misfortune.

who is continuing to trust in God, our provider.

who is being reminded daily of what “true riches” really are.

It's Just Gonna Have to Wait

Pin It Now! I mentioned in a previous post that basically, I want to have a bloggy makeover. Well, I think I stressed the name more than anything, but what I really want is an entire makeover.

I've been looking at all the free stuff, but nothing really suits my desires. Plus, with the free stuff, I need to know how to do a lot of the tweaking on my own, and I just don't know enough about all the techy junk involved. It's just too stressful.

One decision I have made is that I am going to have to pay someone to change my blog for me.

I am thrilled about my decision actually, but I just can't afford to do it right at this particular moment.

I am in the process, though, of researching some sites/companies/people that do this sort of thing. Blogs By Sneaky Momma is one site in which I am interested.

Can anybody recommend any more amazing and affordable bloggy designers?

Sea of Indecision

Pin It Now! And it's all over a silly blog name.

Not only am I trying to decide a new layout to fit my growing bloggy needs, but I have had a hunch for a little while now that maybe my blog name should go too.

"Autumn's Attic" isn't really doin' it for me anymore, and Brandi's Basement just doesn't have that same ring to it, ya know.

A few hurdles stand in the way of all this change, though. One-- I need techy-hubby help (well, not for the name part), two-- once I make a decision, it is extremely hard for me to change (It's been Autumn's Attic for 3 years!), three--I just plain can't think of a new name...and it's driving me up the wall!!!

Why is so imperative that I think fast? So I won't think about it every stinkin', waking moment!! Do you ever get like that? When something just won't leave your mind even when you want it to, or even when it's not really that important?

But, no matter how hard I try to rid myself of these life draining thoughts, my brain remains a sea of turbulent water, tossing a myriad of clever and not so clever blog titles to and fro. None of them wash ashore to make a huge imprint in the sand saying, "This is the one!", or "Pick me!", and I am getting ever so tired. I wish a hungry shark would just come and eat 'em all up!

The fam decided to try and help over tomato soup tonight.

Mullin suggested thoughtfully, "How about Brandi's Bank of Thoughts?" (Appreciate the thought, honey.)

Lincoln chimed in, "Or just Brandi's Brainstorms." (Hmmm, not feelin' it.)

Leave it to dad to send the kids into peals of laughter at the dinner table-- "Brandi's Brainfarts." Nice.

Well, I can see we are getting nowhere here, so I will sleep on it. Literally, I hope I sleep on it. Insomnia please stay away tonight. It's just a blog name, nothing important. So, you don't have to keep me up, k? K.

Obama-wan Kenobi

Pin It Now!

I think my oldest son is as addicted to starwars.com as I am to facebook.com. Many grins when he saw that the president enjoys a little force-action every now and then.

He looks like quite the natural and blue suits him well, don't ya think? May he make Obi-wan proud.

I am sure any future, intelligent conversations that I have with my children about our president will now conjure up images of Obama wielding a light saber instead of him giving a savvy speech in coat and tie. Oh well, I do have boys. What else can I expect? Star Wars is on the brain 24/7!

Oh, and I am just waiting for the rumors to start about how Obama secretly believes in and actually uses The Force when making super difficult decisions regarding the future of America.

Tongue and cheek people, tongue and cheek. ;)

Hate What is Evil, Not Who

Pin It Now! After reading this article about a local pastor, and I use this word lightly, I am thinking the name of this church might be slightly misleading. "Faithful Word" Baptist Church just might be stretching the truth a bit. Hateful Word Baptist Cult sounds more fitting if you ask me. Seriously, is this guy reading the same Word that I am? If so, there's some serious word twisting going on to fuel his own fire and build his own army of people haters.

I do not claim to know or understand everything in the Bible, but last time I checked didn't Jesus tell his followers to "love" their enemies. Didn't he encourage us to "consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds"? I don't think love always looks like huggy-lovey-kissy-poo, in fact some love has to be "tough love", and loving others doesn't mean we have to check our beliefs or what we stand for at the door. Loving others doesn't mean we have to agree with or approve of what others do. BUT, what I do know is that love is not wishing death threats upon people, no matter who they are.

Sorry pastor Anderson, but I wish you would step off your soapbox of hate and spend more time in your closet on your knees praying for our president and not against him. I wish you would lead your congregation in love instead of stirring up so much hate and anger. Showing love doesn't mean you have to compromise the Truth. In fact, aren't we supposed to be speaking the Truth in love? The video clip that I watched of you was embarrassing and disgusting, but I refuse to stoop to your level and say vile things about you. I will say a prayer for you, though, in hopes that you will have a change of heart.

I bear the name Christian and make no apologies for it. I am not ashamed to be a follower of Jesus. What I am sorry for and ashamed of, though, is people who claim to bear the same name but so sadly misrepresent who we are all about. Jesus told us to hate what is evil not who.
I hate what is evil about me, I hate what is evil about this world, but shouldn't I love the very souls for which Jesus so willingly died?

Fellow Christians, please join me in prayer for our president and country. We could probably do a lot more good if we would spend more time on our knees than making an issue out of everything Obama says and does. I am not saying we shouldn't care, or that we should sit silently and ignorantly around watching our country slowly fall apart, but good grief I have had enough already!!! Like Bush was perfect or something?! Like having a Republican in office makes everything okay?!

Obama, if you are having a bout of insomnia or something and so happen to be perusing sappy, stay-at-home mom blogs, I just want you to know that even though I may not agree with you on everything, I surely don't hate you nor would I provoke anyone else to do so. And I am praying for you not against you. I pray that God would use you to better our country and that you would uphold the virtues and freedoms which our great country was founded upon. And may God bless you and your family and protect you from all the wackoes out there.

Airis, the Garden Fairy

Pin It Now! *This post is for you, Aaron, since you were dying to know...

Last Mother's Day, my family gave me a solar, garden fairy. I have named her Airis, and she has a very special spot in our backyard nestled between a cascading bougainvillea and a purple flowered Katie Ruellia.

Shh, please don't wake her just yet. She is a Moon Fairy, you see, and as dusk fades to night, she will awake to the soft, warm glow of her crystal orb. Sweet dreams.

Congrats Duggars!

Pin It Now! Dear Michelle Duggar,

I just wanted to say congratulations to you and your precious family!! I must admit, when my husband texted me the news that you were expecting your 19th baby, my jaw dropped. I seriously cannot imagine being pregnant that many times, and raising that many children. The thought of what laundry, cooking, and cleaning must be like is completely overwhelming!!! And oh, the noise-- yikes!! I seem to be quite content raising and home schooling the three with which I have been blessed.

I love seeing your glowing face and listening to you all share your faith on your show. The way you live and trust God's plan and provision for your family is truly an inspiration. What great role models all of you are!! May you be blessed with a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Oh, and I really like the name, Jaeda, if it's a girl. :)

"Beat It" on the Front Lawn

Pin It Now! I know, I know, everybody's sick of hearing about Michael Jackson already, but I just couldn't let all this Michael mania pass without sharing one of my very own fond memories of the smooth rockin', moon walkin' king of pop.

It had to be around the summer of '83 or something like that when my aunt (who is just 3 years older than me) and I decided to blast the neighborhood bullies away with our hip shakin', finger pointin' version of Michael Jackson's number one hit, "Beat It". Yep, we stood on my front lawn for all to see, and I honestly can't remember if we were singing along to a boom box of some sort or if it was just our voices. And I don't remember if our smooth moves worked either. If the bullies weren't blasted away, though, I am almost positive it would have sent them into a fit of gut-wrenching laughter. I remember listening to M. J. songs, too, on camping trips with my aunt. Oh, those were the days...

I admit I have been watching a few of the Michael Jackson specials lately. Mark's downloaded a bunch of his songs, and I loved watching my mom rewind him doing the moonwalk over and over again the other day. Regardless of the strangeness surrounding his life, he was extremely gifted and uniquely talented.

You know, I'm sittin' here right now thinkin', we've got a couple of bullies on our street. Hmmm, ya think my kids would mind if I put on my black jeans and a red leather jacket and kind of relived my 1983 memory? Yeah, I could do just that--set my Zune on a rock, turn up the volume and have at it. I sure would like to point my finger and shake my hips at a few kids blaring, "Just beat it, beat it, beat it...

Okay, maybe not.

June 12th

Pin It Now! June 12th is exactly 5 months after Lincoln's birthday.

June 12th is exactly 2 months before Mullin's birthday.

June 12th will be one month and 2 days after our 12th anniversary.

June 12th will also be the day we find out if we will be going through a second lay-off.

While Mark disagrees, I hate knowing in advance. Just something else to wonder and worry about. Something to nag at me every now and then. It makes me realize just how weak my faith can be, too. :(

I couldn't possibly imagine calling myself "Grandma" in 2 years

Pin It Now! I was a bit shocked about hearing this news, but not really, since I actually knew of a similar situation where I used to live. I could rant and rave about this very topic but would probably end up with both my feet in my mouth. Vicki already said beautifully what I was thinking anyway, so I will leave it at that.

Worse Than Raw Chicken

Pin It Now! I don't like touching raw chicken with my bare hands. I think there might be something worse, though, and I found it in my shower's drain this afternoon.

I clean pretty regularly, but I usually forget to clean the hair out of my drain. I almost gagged when I pulled out the matted mess. Thankfully I was wearing heavy duty gloves. Bleh!

To someone standing a few feet away, it would have appeared to be a dead house cat that I was pulling out. Seriously, it was a wad of hair that would have made Crystal Gale jealous. If it hadn't been for the gunk and goo clinging to it, I could have donated it to charity.

How in the world can so much of my hair fall out? Makes me sad to think that I really could have thick, beautiful hair if it would just stay intact. In a few years or so, I will probably look like Gollum. Sigh.

Holiday Weekend Shopping Experience

Pin It Now! Had my bank account been full, I still wouldn't have braved the 5 am crowds (mobs) for the sake of a "good" deal on Black Friday. It would probably be safer for me to stroll the streets of south Phoenix in the middle of the night than to fight my way through that sea of selfish, childish creatures who call themselves civilized adults. I mean, how can people stuff their faces 'til their bellies are full, give thanks for all their blessings then get up the next day and stampede another human being to death all because of a SALE!! That's just crazy. And very, very sad.

Okay, okay, I know not everyone who shops the day after Thanksgiving falls into that category. Even I have done it once, and it's actually a nice memory. It was way back in November of '98. Mark went camping, I think, and since I do not do that sort of thing I stayed home. He was so sweet and gave me a certain amount of money to go shopping for "themed" Christmas tree decorations. So yes, the day after Thanksgiving I went to Hobby Lobby and filled a cart to the brim with beautiful gold and garnet ornaments and such. The really exciting part is that everything I bought was 50% off! And I can honestly say, I didn't knock down any old ladies or crafty moms to get what I wanted.

This year I had the pleasant experience of accompanying my mom on Saturday while she shopped for Christmas presents. One of the reasons I do love living in the hotter than hot desert is because of all the time I get to spend with my mom. We always have a great time together. She even bought me a Green Tea Frappuchino for which I was ever so thankful. I think I was beginning to have GTF withdrawal. It was a little difficult for me when we went to Target and ended up in the candy isle, but I am proud of myself for resisting all of those tantalizing, Christmas colored treats that I really can't afford.

Oh my goodness, there are these limited edition Christmasy flavored Junior Mints that were calling my name, and I hope no one noticed me foaming at the mouth over the red and white striped bags of Ghirardelli chocolate peppermint bark! I am a little kid in a candy store when it comes to beautifully wrapped chocolate, and the wrappers in shiny reds, greens and golds were almost too much to bear. I usually love to have Christmas candy on display (and some hidden away), but this year that just isn't going to happen. Not that I need it anyway.

The real test will be in just a few minutes. I have to go to Fry's to do some regular food shopping to get us by for the rest of this week, and I just don't know if I will be able to resist 2 days in a row. Not when I have been thinking about it all night and all morning! I know what will happen at the store. I will justify the bag of M&Ms or whatever by telling myself I just won't eat real food for lunch or something.... Anyway, we shall see.

I haven't.

Now, since I have joined Bloglines, I can see who, on my "favorite blogs list", has updated. I don't have to visit every single blog on my list to see who has a great, new post. If only I would have known about this sooner.

Facebook Family

Pin It Now! I know, I know, I am always last to join in on any kind of new technology, but finally I have joined facebook.

I am known for shying away from anything that requires a lot of reading where following instructions is involved, especially if it is something on the Internet. I get this strange sort of nagging feeling that I am just one key away from accidentally selling my soul or something crazy like that!

But, I guess it was about time for me to shed my status as an amoeba concerning all things computery. I think I have at least evolved into an earthworm.

I keep telling myself that I have to at least try to keep up for my kids' sakes. As long as Daddy's around, I know there is nothin' to worry about, though!!
