He Speaks to Me Preparing to Hear From God Book Review

Longing to Hear God's Voice

Have you ever been desperate to hear from God?

Do you long to be a sheep who hears her Shepherd's voice?

Of course we can pick up our Bibles any time we want and "hear" what God has to say to us. And it's absolutely wonderful. We can "hear" on a daily basis how he loves us, how we can love Him, and how we can love others.

But sometimes I long for more. Do you?
I admit that I crave to hear from God on a more personal level. His Spirit whispering to my spirit. His voice meant for my ears only, an intimate expression of his abounding grace and mercy and a tender reminder that I'm truly his child.

The good news is that God desires to have a relationship with ordinary people - us. And relationships, as we know, require a certain amount of communication. However, it's important to keep in mind that we can't make God speak to us. I'm glad that Shirer makes it abundantly clear that "He speaks to whom He chooses, when He chooses, for reasons He chooses."

Having said that, you won't find a magic formula within the pages of this book for getting God to speak to you. What you will find are practical things you can do to prepare your heart and position yourself to hear from Him when He does speak. What a blessing to know, too, that sometimes despite our unpreparedness "God knows what His children need and often pours out His grace despite our unbelief."

In her book, Shirer shares six traits that can help us clearly hear God and respond to what He says. These six traits: (1) a simple RELATIONSHIP, (2) a single-minded WORSHIP, (3) a set-apart HOLINESS, (4) a still ATTENTIVENESS, (5) a sold-out HUNGER, and (6) a servant SPIRIT are gleaned from Shirer's study of the first 10 verses of 1 Samuel chapter 3.

Shirer uses personal examples and stories from Scripture to encourage us to cultivate these traits into our own lives. If you enjoy listening to Priscilla Shirer speak, you will probably enjoy reading her words. I know I felt like she was right in the room with me as I read her book. :)

At the end of each chapter she features a "Where Are You Now?" page. Here is where it gets super practical. There are a few questions to help you evaluate where you are and how you can move forward. Finally, she closes each chapter in prayer.

I highly recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

My Personal Experience

Most of the time when I hear God's voice, I sense it as more of a knowing in my spirit. But, a couple of summers ago I was reading outside when out of nowhere I "heard" God whisper to my soul.

"Daughter."

That's what I felt Him say - I didn't really hear it audibly. But, to me, it was as clear as the desert sky above me.

I wasn't reading the Bible or even a nonfiction Christian book. It was some Christian fiction story that I'd downloaded to my Kindle.

But, out of the blue, He spoke to me. Immediately, tears streamed down my sun-kissed cheeks, and I thanked the Lord for calling me His daughter. His voice was a balm to this sinful soul who sometimes doubts her salvation.
